Everyone has a “why” that drives what they do and how they do it. Jim Johnson states that he is an educator today because of the influence of his 6th Grade Teacher, Marian Kaiser; his Jr. High Track Coach, Harold Wilhelm; his High School Choir Director, Vernon Nicholson; and his Education Professor, Charlene Myers.

These wise educators understood that you have to connect with students and engage them in a positive relationship before you have any hope of teaching them. The teachers that are honored above built a caring relationship with Jim that opened the door allowing them to invest in him as a person. They understood that student engagement is the “Holy Grail” of education and they cared enough about Jim to build the trusted relationship that was necessary for him to have a teachable spirit.  Jim totally agrees with author Josh McDowell when he states, “Rules without Relationships Lead to Rebellion”. The flip side is also true, “Rules with Relationships Lead to Respect”.

Jim believes that all teachers desire to be good teachers. They got into the business in order to teach and to make a positive difference in the lives of their students. They truly want their students to be successful. But teachers are often frustrated by classroom chaos or by disengaged students they can’t seem to reach. The response is often a set of haphazard rules or unclear expectations that are punitive in nature and which are inconsistently enforced. This leads to frustration for both the teacher and the student alike. There has to be a better way! There is!
